What Is CPP Film and What Is It Used For?

A practical introduction to cast polypropylene film for packaging buyers and converters.

CPP film, or cast polypropylene film, is a transparent or white polypropylene film produced by the cast extrusion process. Molten polymer is extruded through a flat die and cooled rapidly on a chilled roll, producing a film with excellent clarity, stable gauge and a wide heat-sealing window.

How CPP Film Is Made

Unlike blown film, cast film is cooled on a chill roll. This fast cooling gives CPP its characteristic clarity and gloss while allowing precise control of thickness and surface properties. Corona treatment can be added to improve printability and lamination bond strength.

Key Properties

  • High transparency and gloss
  • Excellent heat-seal strength and low seal initiation temperature
  • Good moisture barrier
  • Consistent thickness and stable coefficient of friction
  • Good stiffness and dimensional stability

Common Applications

CPP film is widely used as a sealant and base film in flexible packaging. Typical applications include food lamination, retort pouches, candy twist wrap, bakery packaging and general converting.

CPP vs BOPP

BOPP is biaxially oriented for higher tensile strength and stiffness, while CPP remains unoriented and offers better heat-seal performance and tear properties. Many laminates combine BOPP or PET as the outer layer with CPP as the sealant layer.
